In a recent weekly tip email to subscribers, I offered six ways teams could make their daily scrums more useful. (If you aren't subscribing to those, here's how.) But I had such a hard time limiting myself to six that I thought I'd share a few more here. With that in mind, here are ten tips for improving your daily scrum meetings.


In the end, always strive for better results. Look back at your track record and learn. Mastering the skill of Scrum meetings requires practice and improvement from the last time it was held, so at the end of each type of meeting, sit back and contemplate. Most commonly, daily stand-up style meetings are used in software development and programming services, where there are many moving parts and stakeholders. These projects are generally more complicated in nature, so regular stand-up meetings can help ensure everything is on track.


We hold daily Scrum of Scrums meetings on our project. The participants (i.e. non-technical managers) each manage several smaller projects and provide updates on their projects (from their daily scrums the day before). During the Scrum of Scrums, what should be captured in writing and disseminated to the participants afterwards?


The purpose of a daily standup is to catch everyone up on the project without participating in a time-consuming meeting. The structure of these standup meetings can vary, but team members often discuss the tasks they completed the previous days, the tasks they plan to complete today, and any issues or challenges to address.


One of the main drawbacks of daily scrums is that there is no time to record meeting notes. Adopting a standup tool provides you with a written track record of what team members discuss in these meetings.

Although implementing them is not difficult, making the most of these Agile daily standups with your colleagues requires practice and nonetheless, experimentation.


Running a 10-minute daily Kanban with 15 people would be quite the challenge and you would have a hard time getting any value out of it. Keep your meetings focused based on activity and break them down whenever a team grows too large.


We absolutely agree with your statement. A self-organizing team should choose the most appropriate way for them to conduct their Daily Stand-up meetings. However, if possible of course, we always suggest holding the meeting stood-up because that keeps it short and to the point. When teams are seated, they usually tend to get in the mood of a meeting longer than 10-15 minutes which is exactly what we want to avoid with the daily stand-ups :).


Unlike a daily scrum, a daily standup is not part of the official Scrum lexicon or rituals. Although it borrows heavily from Agile principles, daily standups are quick status meetings where the extended team involved in a Sprint provides updates on relevant items.

One thing my management team does to stay on track is come prepared with specific areas where we need assistance or another team member is a blocker for something. This way, we can acknowledge those blockers and define action items to clear them (to be completed outside of the meeting of course!) without getting into too much unnecessary detail. Another thing we do very well is balance the current with the future.
